Dear Mr. Priebus:
I write on behalf of that much maligned and abused group referred to as “Birthers.” We (the alleged Birthers), respectfully demand that you stop referring to us as marginal, fringe, racist, and outcast.
We represent fifty percent of the voters in your party and over thirty-eight percent of the population. Those are numbers recited by news organizations that aren’t even friendly to us. Here in New York, a liberal town, the New York Daily News, a liberal newspaper, conducted an online survey over a twenty-four hour period following the release of the long form birth certificate. Over sixty-nine percent of the people stated that this issue is not over because it took so long to release the document and because we do not know that the document is authentic. That poll was taken after political analysts on television almost universally declared that rational people cannot possibly have honest doubt about the birth certificate and its object.
What the poll is saying, what we are saying, is that character matters. There are lingering doubts about the character of this man. Since you are a devout Christian it should be easy for you to understand our position. Jesus said it like this: “For a good tree bringeth not forth corrupt fruit; neither doth a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.” St. Luke 6:43. And if the root of the man is corrupt then that necessarily affects his thinking in everything from foreign policy to the economy. You have it backwards.
I am the graduate of an Ivy League institution. My alma mater, Union Seminary is connected to Columbia University. Additionally, I have lectured at Oxford University, in Oxford, England. Donald Trump, as you know, is a graduate of Wharton Business School which is connected to the University of Pennsylvania. Those facts are normally unimportant, but they are relevant here. One does not graduate from such institutions without critical thinking skills.
While you don’t have Ivy League credentials you are a lawyer. As such you are trained to thinking critically and skeptically. It would be disappointing if you didn’t ask why Obama would take so long and fight so hard not to release a seemingly innocuous document if there was not something being hidden? You would be less than a lawyer if you did not ask, is this document authentic? Your political hero, Ronald Reagan put it like this, “trust but verify.”
Character, and honor, and the Constitution are never a distraction from the issues. They are the issues. Alexis de Tocqueville was right. He said “America is great because America is good. If America ceases to be good she will cease to be great.” We believe this. We will not go away. We will not be silenced. We will vote!
